I walked and witnessed, learning the language of wild places—The subtle change in the surface of water when a fish rises for a fly, the snort of a startled deer, the feel of moss soothing my feet, and the mysterious colored vapors within the silver sparkle of the blue-black night sky are the things that inspired my path.

From this beginning, rooted in the natural world, I earned a Masters of Landscape Architecture and started a consulting practice—Ann Christensen Environmental Design—to help repair the fabric of our ecosystems and to design spaces for clients with the intent to connect people with place and beauty.

For the first 15 years, 75% of my practice involved large environmental planning and restoration projects with a focus in wetland and riparian landscapes. In the more recent years, I have shifted my focus to sustainable garden design so as to work more intimately with others in the process of creating outdoor spaces which inspire.

I enjoy small as well as large projects—from artistic pruning to site planning. I am realistic and have the ability to create beauty with your desires, site, and lifestyle in mind. I have been known to say “Healthy soil creates healthy plants,” “Choose the right plant for the right place,” and “Create it and you will come.” The important thing to me is that I assist you to find joy in your garden, which can mean assisting you to find sustainable ways to manage it.
